How to label a screenshot so it is understood

01

A label that shows on any background

The text has a white outline around the letters, so it reads on dark and busy backgrounds alike. Eight colours, size on a slider, several lines with Shift+Enter.

02

An arrow with a caption

One tool: draw the arrow to the spot and write what is there right away. Or an arrow with a number and step numbering when the explanation is longer than a line.

03

Right after the capture

The editor opens on its own as soon as the capture is taken. Write, crop, blur the private bits, then clipboard, file or link.

How to add text to a screenshot

A label on a screenshot in four steps

  1. 1 Install the browser extension or the app for Windows or macOS.
  2. 2 Capture an area, a window or the full page and the editor opens.
  3. 3 Press T, click on the capture and type. W is an arrow with a caption, N is numbering.
  4. 4 Copy, save the file or get a link to the screenshot.

Text on a screenshot FAQ

How do I write text on a screenshot?
In the editor that opens after the capture, press T or pick Text on the toolbar, click where you want it and type. Enter finishes the label, Shift+Enter adds a line, Esc cancels.
How do I change the size and colour of the text?
Colour is the colour dot on the toolbar, eight options. Size is the same thickness slider as for arrows: the higher the value, the larger the font.
The text is hard to see on a dark background, what do I do?
Nothing: every letter has a white outline, so the label reads on dark and busy backgrounds alike. Need more contrast, pick another colour.
How do I caption an arrow on a screenshot?
Press W, draw the arrow to the spot and type the caption right away. The arrow and the caption enter the history as one action: Ctrl+Z removes both.
Can I edit or move a label?
Yes. The select tool (V) lets you drag any label, Ctrl+Z undoes changes. Once saved, the text becomes part of the image.
Does this extract text from a screenshot (OCR)?
No, this page is about a label on top of the capture. Recognising text in a screenshot is a different feature, and it is not available yet.
